Alumnae support for the Waterlow Hall Project

Over the summer, several Alumnae got in touch to find out more about the Waterlow Hall project having read about it in our alumnae magazine 'Resplendens'.

Mona Bayard who left South Hampstead in 1963 contacted us to find out how to support the campaign:

'It is wonderful, and surprising, how easy it has turned out to be to take part in this project which is so close to my heart - my heart as a student, with fond memories of directing our class entry in the drama competition ("Noah" by Andre Obey Act 1) and enjoying the small role of Polixenes in the school play of the "Winter's Tale."

Mona lives in the US and made her donation through the British Schools and Universities Fund which allows her to make a tax free gift from the USA. If you would like to find out more about making a gift from overseas, please just contact or visit SupportUs

The Transformation of Waterlow Hall : STAGE 2 PROGRESS

The ceiling has been stripped out and a new acoustic lining added to the roof of the Waterlow Hall. The structure for the technical gantry is already in place and new doors are about to arrive. Once decoration is complete, stage 2 of the redevelopment will be finished and the hall will be back in use. Now all we have to do is raise the remaining balance of our £3 million target to be able to complete the transformation. If you would like to get involved please visit Support Us

Alumnae support

The latest edition of the alumnae magazine Resplendens is out and features a family who have been educated at South Hampstead for over a century. We are delighted that Ruth Levy (1957) and Joan Arnold (1966) have not just been part of this great South Hampstead legacy but have also chosen to support the Waterlow Hall Campaign in memory of their mother Betty Arnold (nee Hailey) who attended the school from 1915 - 1920).  Thank you.

Step Inside with our Virtual Reality model

More than 100 people took a journey inside the Waterlow Hall plans yesterday as we revealed the Virtual Reality model of the proposed transformation.

Huge thanks must go to Matt Lade who designed and set up the model and to Jessica Learmond-Criqui who made it all possible.

We hope to have another viewing for girls in the senior school in the autumn so look out for details.

Mr Clulow has worked in the Estates department here at South Hampstead for the past 3 years.

‘The Waterlow Hall is used for so many different things that we are in and out setting it up and moving the furniture numerous times every day. The new seating will make such a huge difference to the versatility of the Hall and the time it takes to get it ready for assemblies, talks, productions, concerts, functions and all the other uses the hall has. Roll on retractable seating – we can’t wait!’

Mrs Bernstein and Mrs Kamps see the possiblities for physics with the new Waterlow Hall

‘The redeveloped hall presents all sorts of opportunities for teaching and learning. The new lighting rigs and technology will help us to explain about colour mixing, LEDS, semi-conductors and much more and the whole building will enable us to show how physics can be used in all sorts of creative industries and the wide variety of STEM careers that are available to our pupils.’

Ms Etheridge has recently been appointed our new Director of Debating and Public Speaking.

'I am hugely excited about the re-development plans for the Waterlow Hall. Our girls will benefit from a wide range of public speaking opportunities in this state-of-the-art facility, from small-scale talks and presentations to competitions and debates in collaboration with other schools. The flexible seating, fantastic acoustics and impressive appearance of the new hall will make it the ideal venue to host South Hampstead’s exciting programme of events. At SHHS, we aim to cultivate confidence, eloquence and intellectual dexterity in our students; the Waterlow Hall project is going to give us the platform to take this to the next level. The new space will open up exciting possibilities for the future of public speaking at South Hampstead – I can’t wait to make the most of it!'

£900,000 and we are on the way....

Back in 2014, we announced our ambition to transform the Waterlow Hall. At that time, a number of people made significant pledges to help support this project. Four years on and we are now in a position to realise this ambition. We need to raise £3 million and we are delighted to have already secured £900,000 towards this target thanks to the huge generosity of parents, alumnae and friends of South Hampstead. If you would like to get involved and be part of the Waterlow transformation then please do contact us.
